With the cost of living increasing every day, it's important that every family learn to economize. There are so many ways to save money around the home. The problem is, advertisements cater to today's high-paced lifestyle and easier is better. We're willing to pay extra for convenence. Some of these tips require a little more effort on your part but if you really want to save money, it's worth it.
Household appliances use a lot of energy. Be sure filters are cleaned regularly and don't use the washer or dishwasher unless you have a full load. Whenever possible, hang your clothes out to dry. they smell better and are less wrinkled anyway. Most people have their water heaters hotter than neccessary. Turn it down to 120 degrees. Turn your heat down a few degrees while sleeping. Bundle up with extra blankets. During the day, open the shades and let the sun in. this can raise the temperature of the room a few degrees. Keep low wattage bulbs in your lights and always turn out the light when leaving a room. Don't leave appliances, such as the tv, on when you are not using them. Take showers instead of baths and to save hot water, don't turn the hot on full blast and then the cold to adjust. Use both evenly to give you a comfortable temperature bath. You can also wash your dishes in cold or warm water instead of hot. The dishes get just as clean. Always stop water leaks immediately. Small leaks can waste gallons of water per day.
When shopping, buy generic (or store-brand). Use coupons and buy sale items. Buy in bulk, it's much cheaper. Shop without the kids and take a list with you. Don't buy anything not on your list. Shop with a limited amount of cash so you won't be tempted to spend more. Watch each item being rung up, often the scanner misses sale prices. Don't be afraid to shop at thrift stores or use hand-me-downs for the kids. Buy new clothes in seperates so you can make several different outfits from them.
Use a bank with no service charges and keep up with the credit card charges. Be sure not to chargemore than you can afford to pay. If you must use the credit card, treat it like a check card. Don't spend money you don't have.
Avoid eating out as much as possible. Fast foods are bad for you and way too expensive, so are economy foods such as frozen dinners and pre-packaged meals.
Reuse whenever you can. Often you can reuse vacuum bags, or invest in a vacuum that doesn't use bags. Paper towels aren't necessary. Clea your glass with old newspapers. Use plastic grocery bags as trash bags for the bathroom or bedroom. Save plastic containers for use for storage, cups, or whatever you think of to use them for.
